Light up my Life x

image

Ah! The potent joys of a holiday to Kent, where each time we visit I think I’ve cracked the lack of internet, only to fail miserably again and again..until the only option is to (with natural great regret) down tools entirely and embrace the holiday spirit and a world without computers.  Needless to say, it was a walk along the path to bliss! But more on Kent another day..both pre and post trip I’ve been obsessed with the light for our new dining room. Much to my own surprise, having looked at various 1950’s and 70’s lights with their cool drama, I went for this classic flemish brass number.  It was the cost shape that made it stand out..over a metre tall and two tiered, like a Christmas tree (imagine decorating with ivy, fir and baubles. Sigh) but it was in a pretty sorry state and covered in a dark varnish much loved in the 1940’s that now just detracted, like a bad fitting nun’s habit from it’s simple lines and austerity appeal.

image

But how to clean it? Pinterest proved to be a wealth of info and basically there were two options – making a paste with vinegar and baking powder or soaking it in nail varnish remover.  Not being sure how much nail varnish remover would be required to fill the bath and dubious about the effect of remover on electric wiring, I opted for the first choice.

image

The vinegar and baking soda bubbled up beautifully when mixed together and had the additional benefit of the evocative scent of a down town chippie.

image

It was  slathered on and left to simmer gently.

image

The result? A huge, stinking, smelly mess…and no noticeable change.

image

Undeterred, Plan B went into action: Cotton wool pads soaked in nail varnish remover and wrapped around the light like a mummy.

image

It definitely made a difference, but didn’t shift the deeper stains which even elbow grease couldn’t budge.

Returned to instructions…and to give them their due, they did say to use very fine steel wool with the nail varnish remover.

And when I finally got hold of some (slack..always make sure you have required tools before you start) it was like magic..the black literally evaporated away. From this..

To this.

Like Cinders from the ashes, she’s turned into a real beaut! Now I just need to source some of those vintage, edison-like-filament bulbs that have been popping up everywhere..pray they do them in this size…but knowing my luck…they’ll cost more than the light!

Sometimes you need something in your wardrobe with a little bit of rock ‘n’ roll on the dashboard.

How about a pair of tie-up trousers? A real shout from the eighties when they were attractively called paper bag trousers…

I did a Swedish embroidery class with a friend last week – everything was bright, breezy and scandi.  It’s summer..everything is still bright and breezy..so why am I drawn to the dark side?

I imagine what it’s like to look at bright, green leaves through black window frames, the light pulling you out, the garden dancing.

Today is our fifteenth wedding anniversary…..15 years!…I wanted to upload a picture from the holiday, but the IPad is failing me, instead it’s pictures of all things brass and delicious saved into the library before we left, but they’re a surprisingly good representation of a golden time and a very wonderful man….

Time..the beast that no man can stop.  It’s almost the end of summer term, which has nearly the same madness of Christmas with it’s particular frenzy of Sports Days, concerts, exhibitions, class parties and Prize Days.  The children finally break up on Thursday, we leave for three days glamping on Friday (yay!), arrive back on Monday..kids leave with their Grandparents for Greece on the Tuesday…(we leave the following week).  It feels a bit like being in a tumble dryer. Or a piece of bread dough being pulled and pushed.

A Modern Old Soul..

Atlantique Ascoli started with a quest to find the perfect blouse and using an innate confidence in simplicity and with a lightness of touch came up with a genius collection of seven pure white shirts..one for each day of the week. Each had a different hint of vintage and all had the suggestion of a well-run laundry and the smell of hot iron against soft, worn cotton.  Now she’s expanding her palette..

It’s the stuff dream wardrobes are made of..the sort of clothes I wish I could cut out and keep. Instead, I can just gulp at the prices, admire the aesthetic and take the inspiration to look at my own wardrobe with new eyes – to see if I actually have 7 days worth of outfits..and for the UK that means 7 for sun..and 7 for rain…and maybe find out where the holes are…

So Far..

The plan this sumer is to find the perfect beach dress within a reasonable budget, made with the ravishing timbre of towelling.  Apart from the lux offering of Lisa Marie (sigh), this picture above represents the biggest research success so far – it’s called a surf dress – which makes total sense: practical and for a purpose.  The downside is that it’s not symmetrical (sadly I’m a sucker for 2 patch pockets or one large, central kangaroo pouch), it’s from Australia and personally, I’d like a longer version.  But the price is good: £47.43 plus postage, so if anyone’s interested it comes from here. Now I know these dresses are a genre I’ve looked at other surf dresses, but infuriatingly, they’re either made from fleece, covered in logos or they don’t have the v-neck..and that v-neck is crucial…it’s what stops it from being a sack.

d25228bbe550b1801bde34e25950e0ef

Then I thought: just concentrate on the utilitarian shape – what’s appealing is the boxy shape with the neck-line and the pockets..which is just like a painters or fisherman’s smock…then elongate for a dress.

Would ‘A’ work in towelling??

Slowly it’s starting to make sense – it’s good to highlight what you love and want..but it’s still a work in progress..

Time is running away.  I have May to make decisions, June to order..we’re away in July..work starts in August.  It’s really not long. I’m sort of there on most things..but I know that what I want to do is a dance with the dark side – the really dark side –  which in view of the popularity of scandi design is like holding hands with the devil..but if I stand back it’s more a collective reaction to inspiration from my past that’s already firmly stood the test of time..

dfd91f8da66cd0defa94d2a1d6338889

One of my most favourite interiors ever is Henry Higgins house in Wimpole Street from the film My Fair Lady with it’s opulent multi-layered mash of texture and colour..there’s a welcoming warmth far removed from the clinical hotel look we’ve come to view as the norm. The William Morris wallpaper is spectacular as is the sense of history and quality.

It’s not the colours – it’s the good/bad design thing that’s oppressive about our modern interiors..the time has come just to claim the space. I think a trip to Leighton House where the above picture came from is needed to further that connection with Victorian opulence and underline the fact it’s not about being different – there’s very little that’s truly new – it’s about going with what you feels is right..rather than what’s expected.
