If approaching September means anything it means stocking up on stationary. Which underlines the enigma…why do we need to buy it every September? There’s the normal losses down the back of the sofa, chewed by the children, eaten by the dog.  But the real reason is usually simply the lack of quality and that stationary belongs to the class of products blighted by the modern disease of built in obsolescence.  They just want you to buy it again.  So why not think outside the pencil box?

Tools to Liveby is a dreamy online shop that has done the hardwork upfront, sourcing beautiful stationary products from around the world that have stood the test of time.

The emphasis is on quality and the joy is in the detail, from products like these – brass pencil protectors from Germany.

To memorable packaging.

It puts the quality back into quantity.

This week has been a matter of smoothing the road whilst riding the battle bus: Lots of things happening, too much juggling and not enough time for writing – something had to give.  But we’re definitely on the acceleration towards the end.

Well – sort of end – there’ll still be the decorating to finish, and given my ability to blow the budget, it’ll all be down to me to climbing ladders and wielding paint brushes.  Not that I really mind – I like the sense of ownership…and at least when the colours polymorph it’s not a double whammy of paying for new paint and decorators to put right.  But I’ve reached the stage I just want it finished…to see everything back in the rooms..pictures on the walls..the spaces given their kiss of life.

Upstairs we have a whole room jammed to the ceiling with bulging boxes and bits.  It’s going to be interesting to see what makes it back – what one needs (we’ve managed with very little for the last six months ) versus what one wants (I’ve missed cookery books, wedding photos and vases) versus essentials: a running tap, a sink, a dishwasher…a fridge door that opens all the way..an oven! How have we managed without a kitchen for 6 months??

Today the tap is going in – the oven is in the house rather than in the shed.  The lovely French cabinet is also in – but I think photos can wait till all the handles are on. Hehe.

At the moment I’m just removing all the lacquer from the brass with nail varnish remover and elbow grease so they can all age disgracefully and develop their own patina. One’s own patina…A life’s essential don’t you think?

Backsplash Recap..

From hero to zero: After the joy of last week, all that’s now left of the kitchen is an empty room with a few pipes in the floor as it’s all been shipped to the spray painters.  I committed to the final colour yesterday…nerve wracking! Particularly when you’ve had your heart set on one shade since the start…and then you’re told it’s not possible.  Thank God I’m a great believer in fate..but it hasn’t stopped my heart from pounding.

But more decisions await: There was this post on splashbacks a while back and the final look still needs to be pinned down.  Loving all things metallic at the moment so I’m thinking why not?

So much to choose from!

But budget does come into it..so I took myself off to bog standard B and Q to see what I could find that could be man-handled into something different…and was surprisingly successful.  There’s this woven brass sheet, reminiscent of French Bergere sofas and chairs..

Laid over a stainless steel sheet it would compliment and pull in the stainless steel from the fridge/freezer..

Then there was this design..if the design itself had been bigger I would’ve snaffled it up there and then..

And then they had this..hammered copper rather than brass..again, not sure as it was only in the smaller size..and all the accents are brass..would pink work??

I was sensible..there’s no rush – yet.  So I walked away and will let it all cogitate and stew down…

Today is our fifteenth wedding anniversary…..15 years!…I wanted to upload a picture from the holiday, but the IPad is failing me, instead it’s pictures of all things brass and delicious saved into the library before we left, but they’re a surprisingly good representation of a golden time and a very wonderful man….
