Boots Made for walking..
(Photo from Eileen Fisher)
The boots I want, nay need, for winter…except this photo is an optical illusion…it’s actually leather leggings with ankle boots, but it hasn’t stopped the waves of lust. Except the truly gutting thing is that I had the very pair years ago..and threw them out for no real good reason..it’s a hard lesson to learn: separating the wheat from the chaff..
We are heading to Edinburgh this morning for a four day break and a family gathering at the Zoo..(how apt!) Will be good for Bella to meet some fellow-red-headed-rellies..she’s been practising her Scottish accent especially. I just hope the weather is better up there..I suspect not….

Slides for a Reason x
Slides/sandals with socks were objects of such disdain in my youth: Only worn by tourists from lands that fashion forgot. But now they’re the sheep-shoe of the moment…and why not? They’re the model of languid self-possession with sleepy, knowing eyes.
It’s that edgy, loose type of cool..a button casually left undone rather than a mini skirt and teetering heels…Birks are the reigning royalty. The ones with white soles have particular appeal..shame my feet don’t like them, but there’re plenty of other options..

Some with that extra element of something to elevate them from the ordinary..

I like the way they mix with tailored suits – poise, power, grace. And the ability to run..
(The Adidas originals JS Wing slides in black and white – from 2011, but you might find on Ebay..)
It’s what makes fashion so fascinating: That visceral force and ever changing skyline where something can be so rejected one decade makes a complete turn around the next..
But comfort and style needs embracing: I dare someone to sit next to me and tell me it isn’t true….

Shoe Fantasies..
Just Corking! x
These are my beloved two year old most comfortable summer shoes the world has ever known babies. They’re really on their last hurrah, but I couldn’t resist giving them a summer re-vamp to squeeze that last bit of life out of them..
Studs! Except they’re not..
They’re bog standard drawing pins (tacks to others) pushed into the cork..no glue, nothing..just a bit of thumb grease..
And I absolutely love ’em! Now they’re smiling again for another year on the tiles…

Shoe Notes… x
A Cut Above x
How to describe the Lanvin 2015 Resort Collection?…An incredibly seductive grace without a hint of bodycon or skin…
Bows in clever, contrasted black and white that call out and tempt.
Lines that flow and suggest.
Little hints at the past – like this outfit looking as if it has stepped out of Renoir painting dated 2015.
Red, white and black..who would’ve thought they could look so colour-blocked chic..
Now with a flash of dusky pink, like a slice of lemon in the perfect cocktail.
(Those shoes!)
Oh to look like this, striding down the street, ready to take on the world..
(The jacket! And quilted!)
It’s a Collection that strikes a powerful note with a myriad of stories – elegant, super-chic silky illusions..but still always up for a sneaky gauloise behind the bike sheds with smudged bright red lippy and dancing eyes…

THE RESULTS! x
Pray silence for the Grand Announcement: This vintage lipstick case plus my favourite red lipstick will be travelling off to the talented and amazing Winner of the inaugural Design Your Own Espadrille Competition. The judges found the decision incredibly hard – the competition was fierce and the standard high and many had sleepless nights agonising over their choice…but we do have a result…the design with the most votes was……..drum roll please.…..
No. 4! Which was by………me! So I’m handing it on to the next successful original entry which was…..roll those drums..
No. 5! By the lovely Vasiliki Machaira at Delightfully Peculiar! Huge congrats to you, you are our first ever winner!
To reveal the identities of the other entrants…No. 1 was made by none other than the irrepressible Julie at Vintage Attitude! Who else?!
No 2 was made by…me again!
No.3 was made by the wonderful Amanda at Sew Deputy who I hope has signed up for the next BBC Sewing Bee..
No.6 was made by me, Bella and Charlie.
And No.7 was made by the talented Virginia Romo at virginiaromo.com – I still want to know how you did your design – was it with a bleach pen? But then how did you do the colours??! I think this design got swamped by all the larger photos as the beauty is in the very fine detail…
A Big round of applause and a huge thank you for all those who took part – you are all stars! And congrats and a flowing bottle of champagne to Vasiliki! Now…who’s for a large, cold, bubbly glass?!

Update on Espadrille Competition: Due to various requests I’ve extended the deadline – Photos of creations to be submitted by Friday 23 May, winner announced Monday 26 May!
Mine have arrived – I ordered a white and a navy pair. the white were a bit grey and disappointing – like six month old sports socks – so I took the plunge and sat them upside down in a bowl of bleach..worked perfectly! They are now a glow in the dark white. In fact, if the above pictures float your boat, then check out ‘Bleach fashion’ on Pintrest – has some incredible offerings like how to make a bleach pen by leaving a yellow felt tip pen soaking in bleach for a day…….just think of the possibilities!

This pair were made with the a basic potato print!
Or there’s always the humble permanent marker…
Taking these YouKhanga shoes as inspiration, the options are deliciously infinite…
