There are still things that science can’t explain, like why one pair of earrings is just so much more than another.

But it’s something that Ernestina and Mark Potts, from Milktooth understand.  Their jewellery is a celebration of the have more, buy less philosophy.  Built on an eclectic mix of vintage and own designs their philosophy is simple: embrace your own style, buy the things you love, feel amazing.  Add in the Zeitgeist of desire and it’s a heady mix.

The cherry on the proverbial are the sensible price points (£30-£60) and effortless cool which means this is a name hidden in plain view for those oh so difficult people to buy presents for.

That is, if you’re prepared to give them away….

Mi piace.

Outside x

Small, brave signs of spring are appearing: delicate snowdrops, sturdy crocuses and longer days. Which is maybe why thoughts are turning to the outside and in particular window boxes: Such a simple way to mix lush colour with urban grime.

The decision of which colour to paint the exterior woodwork of the house is also edging ever closer:  Soon the weather won’t be an excuse. Go dark?

Or go neutral?

Put the two decisions together and it’s an interesting conundrum: Which combination looks better zinc, black or terracotta for the window box against the neutral?

Or the grey?

Why is it so hard? Damn.

100 Years

Greta Gerwig is only the fifth woman ever to be nominated for best director at the Oscars.

Marie Curie – honoured twice with the Nobel Prize, in 1903 for physics and 1911 for chemistry.  Between the years 1901 – 2017 only 48 women in total have been awarded the prize.

1984 was the first year women were allowed to run the marathon at the Olympic games. The gold medal was won by Joan Benoit Samuelson.

The Oxford and Cambridge boat race.  First rowed by women in 1927 and then annually since 1964.  The women’s race was only televised in 2015.

Today marks the 100th anniversary of women in the UK getting the vote – but don’t be fooled into thinking this was all women – we’re talking women over 30 with ‘property’..the real equality would take another eleven years.

100 years later discrimination is still rife.  Except it’s not talked about, because it doesn’t happen. In fact there are so many people convinced of their good intentions towards women that they don’t even notice their glaring disrespect for them: Grid girls? Equal number of grid boys please, along with female racing drivers, women mechanics, female engineers, women running F1 teams – and lets add heading up the car companies as well because we still need an explosion of the myth that cars are just for boys.  Time to grow up.

The mirror in which we see ourselves is warped – so why not pull the lines a little bit more?

So thinks Paper London, a fashion brand that imbues simplicity as it’s backbone and strong architectural lines, it’s war cry.

How cool and clever? Asymmetrical, flattering and pulls the eye to a different point of interest.

What’s real?

I think I would like to live in a log cabin by water with honest furnishings and the simple things in life.  But there’s always the nagging thought – does life just look greener on the other side? Are you taking for granted the bits of urban grime that really make your heart sing? Or is living in the big smoke an assumption we all buy into?

Money is an assumption.  It now has no actual value other than the fact we all believe in it.  Take this dress – except that’s an assumption too because it’s really a nightie.  Are you prepared to accept that without questioning?

These could all be multi-functional, year long investment buys – nightwear in the winter, day wear in the summer.  The only barrier is what you’ve been told. Or not.

Bella’s room x

There’s a promise I need to keep and that’s redecorating Bella’s room:  Never an easy thing when they want identity and you’re spending the hard cash.  So in the knowledge of generational divide and the spirit of finding the grey area she’s been pinning her inspiration.

I don’t think I need to worry. Hashtag my girl is growing up. Fast.

The marmite of the bag world: The fanny pack, the bum bag, the bag that is awesomely functional but struggles to be beautiful.  Until now.

Feast your peeks on these beauties: Made by Ashya, a Brooklyn based design label who wanted to produce an unconventional and reimagined look for a luxury bag.

Bumbags have always had a place in my heart – I possess two – but high on the lust list has been a leather utility styled version with a masculine edge: These tick that long sought for box.

The company takes it’s eco credentials seriously – the bags are produced locally in NYC’s garment district, as is the hardware used.

They’re not a cheap option, but that’s the incentive of buy less, buy better.  This is an investment that will just get better with age.

Which has to be a good thing.
