Marianna Leivaditaki x
Yesterday I had a look at the Toast website; like stepping into an indulgent shop where you know your senses are going to be softly stroked and where your shoulders always drop. It’s not just the clothes, but the styling, the photographs, the rich vein of history and timelessness that runs through every piece, the pride and the quality. I always look at their magazine, see what tasty morsels there are and low, behold, there was this article about the Head chef of Moro Hackney, Marianna Leivaditaki and her childhood in Crete. It’s a beautiful piece and well worth a read, speaking an exotic language of freedom and hard work, of dreams and ambition.

Marianna has a new cook book out, which after reading the article has found a place on my wish list (if there is one, slight criticism, its over the cover – all this rich history and the designers hand over a school text book? But maybe that’s just me) The book is full of stories, pictures and glorious recipes – and once again, there’s a sense of authenticity, the thread of time and a real beating heart.
For me, it’s a chance to taste and re-live the magical time we had in Greece this year. Something to cherish as the season changes.

Layers of ethos x
Why do I love Toast so much? Let me count the ways…authentic, wholesome yet elusively stylish and contemporary, it’s a brand that manages to mix the products it sells with the ethos it promotes. For example, these handblown glass baubles at £35 for 5 will be on my wish list this Christmas, not for decorating the tree, but to add to chandeliers all year round – the present element is a Brucie bonus.

If you’re a maker then this bit of information I found on their website could be of real interest to you:
The TOAST New Makers programme will support and mentor five emerging makers. We will offer production, design, business and marketing advice, as well as a digital and physical platform to sell their pieces with full profits being returned to them.
The programme is open to makers of all disciplines. We are seeking makers who use sustainable materials, demonstrate skilled craftsmanship, share an appreciation of texture and colour and have an understanding of thoughtful, functional design.
If you are an emerging maker and would like to apply, please submit your application before 12pm, Wednesday 18th December 2019. The shortlist will be selected by an internal TOAST panel. Please note that this programme is open to all new makers, wherever you may be in the world.
It’s almost the perfect Christmas gift…

Going shopping, flicking through fashion magazines even scrolling through websites I rarely find myself. There’s what I’m meant to aspire to, what I’m supposed to want, carefully curated projections of what I’m supposed to think. But there’s a big distance between me and what’s there. It’s like in the great desire to make money and consume, we’ve allowed ourselves to be swallowed up, and we’ve forgotten what it means to really be. And there’s a cost: somewhere there’s a dark hole of insecurity that’s been left to grow and spread so much of the sadness I see, because if we’re always meant to be striving for something that isn’t us, where’s the love for who we really are? Maybe that’s why I love this article so much, written in Toast magazine. They’ve found normal women like Susan Hay above, living extraordinary lives who’s style is inherent to them as human beings.

This is about women who have stood the test of time, with their wardrobes that have done the same: True inspiration.

What’s real?
I think I would like to live in a log cabin by water with honest furnishings and the simple things in life. But there’s always the nagging thought – does life just look greener on the other side? Are you taking for granted the bits of urban grime that really make your heart sing? Or is living in the big smoke an assumption we all buy into?
Money is an assumption. It now has no actual value other than the fact we all believe in it. Take this dress – except that’s an assumption too because it’s really a nightie. Are you prepared to accept that without questioning?

These could all be multi-functional, year long investment buys – nightwear in the winter, day wear in the summer. The only barrier is what you’ve been told. Or not.

Beans on Toast x
Just the name Toast takes on a whole new meaning when the temperatures start to drop and the smell of fallen leaves mixed with wood smoke permeates the air.
Their clothes capture that louche, appreciation of nature vibe: Loose cuts, soft textures, muddy palette.
If that’s not enough, not only do they do the best classic grey long cashmere cardigan.

But each one of their eleven shops has a shelf filled with books from customers and staff. Inside each books are hand written notes, explaining how the book has enriched the sharer. Visit a shop to share your own book and take one in return. Genius.

New Weave x
The summer has broken here with a bang; I think we’re having the full whack of autumn rains today. We walked into school, avoiding some of the puddles and laughing at everyone gridlocked in their cars, all nicely showered but still afraid of water! It was chaos.
It’s brought fall dressing to a head though, and there’s nowhere better for browsing transitional classics than Toast. This group of clothes is from their OAS range, which stands for Ordinary Attire Studio and are also the three letters at the heart of Toast.
The design aesthetic of simplicity, durability and wearability at it’s core.
It’s workwear reinterpreted for easy workday wear in the modern world.
It’s everything you want in your wardrobe really.

Food for Breakfast..
Things are moving on a pace on the renovation…painting has started on the cellar, lights have gone up and the hallway, which was boarded up for protection by the builders has been opened up again..it now feels twice the size. More paint samples have been bought (I swear this is where paint companies make their profit)…but at least they’re starting to make sense. Pictures will follow soon…
Outside the sky is brilliant blue and it genuinely feels that spring is knocking on the door..hence of the appeal of these spring pics from Toast, suggesting bare foot easy living with simplicity the main ingredient and quality the key.
I want to be here.
Toast also do the best summer scarves..expensive, but worth every penny.
In contrast their Swedish clog shoes are great value – just £65..
Goes to show…there’s always something exciting around the corner…

Karen Walker has managed to capture the sex-factor in her new campaign..with a dog. A dog called Toast with a strong sense of self who doesn’t let anyone walk over her, but is more than happy to throw us a bone..
Sassy and sweet, flashing the flesh and dealing with aplomb with this meaty dish..
Like Karen Walker’s previous campaigns, it’s humourous, cheeky and rather wonderful, with just the perfect combination of wit and gristle.
The glasses aren’t bad either…
