It’s all black and white..

ba68de8f2c1e0093953e0225c4c25476

The good news is I’m off this morning to pick up our platform ladder from my sister…which means the serious renovation decoration is about to start.

The bad news is it’s all going to get done by paintbrush wielding me.

The good news is I like to get my hands dirty: No pain, no gain.

The bad news is…it tends to be more than just my hands..

Backsplash Recap..

7da966f6a9fd8fabaa2656662aef9723

From hero to zero: After the joy of last week, all that’s now left of the kitchen is an empty room with a few pipes in the floor as it’s all been shipped to the spray painters.  I committed to the final colour yesterday…nerve wracking! Particularly when you’ve had your heart set on one shade since the start…and then you’re told it’s not possible.  Thank God I’m a great believer in fate..but it hasn’t stopped my heart from pounding.

af9dc8e2a1734e41ee14d71465def2ae

But more decisions await: There was this post on splashbacks a while back and the final look still needs to be pinned down.  Loving all things metallic at the moment so I’m thinking why not?

So much to choose from!

IMG_8169

But budget does come into it..so I took myself off to bog standard B and Q to see what I could find that could be man-handled into something different…and was surprisingly successful.  There’s this woven brass sheet, reminiscent of French Bergere sofas and chairs..

IMG_8171

Laid over a stainless steel sheet it would compliment and pull in the stainless steel from the fridge/freezer..

IMG_8172

Then there was this design..if the design itself had been bigger I would’ve snaffled it up there and then..

IMG_8180

And then they had this..hammered copper rather than brass..again, not sure as it was only in the smaller size..and all the accents are brass..would pink work??

I was sensible..there’s no rush – yet.  So I walked away and will let it all cogitate and stew down…

An Update: House etc..

IMG_7990

Yesterdays fascinator experiment went well..I was thinking of you Julie (hattitude) as we marshalled in the sinamay into shape! Could’ve done with your skill!!

IMG_7991

No real finished ones to reveal yet..(the first official creative coffee is on Wednesday) but I think we’re a bit more prepared..

IMG_7992

(It’s great stuff just to let loose and play with..I recommend it.)

IMG_7997

On the house front, there’s no longer a broken neck risk checking out the cellar…we now have stairs!..

IMG_7993

Upstairs…could that actually be a sink in the kitchen??!

IMG_7994

To the unknowing eye, this all just looks like mismatched piles of wood..

IMG_7995 IMG_8002

To me, it’s the light at the end of the tunnel..(even knowing, once it’s made it’s coming out (sob!) to be painted (and so the floor can go down))..but this is pure progress. We may even have a working bin soon – the excitement, the luxury!

Hats Off…

It’s the trial run today for our termly creative coffee morning for the mum’s in Charlie’s class…we’re making fascinators to be worn at our class party the following week.  Cross your fingers – I’ve only ever been a pupil before, never the teacher, hence the need for a few guinea pigs, but I was treated to a class just before Christmas….and found it fascinating…here’s hoping for luscious lilly’s..

Jessica Kramer is my new arthouse-slash-fully-fledged-rockstar (of the jewellery kind) and the maker/owner of Hawkhouse. She’s been a wanderer and traveller, soaking up the sights and sounds of six of the seven continents of the world before love made her drop anchor or as she says ‘Wild woman falls in love with island boy and signs up for Etsy’.  Her story and all it’s wonder is ingrained in her pieces.

Her works are frank and forthright without the slightest glint of superficiality, just pure natural beauty shining through.

There’s a visceral feeling of groundedness (is that a word??) straight talking and sincerity.

Designer prices? No – everything, even the uncut emeralds above are around the £40 plus shipping;  This is outside the brain boil of mainstream madness, brand and oneupmanship, here it’s honesty and integrity that take centre stage and run straight through the middle of every single piece.

Just simply inherently cool.

Happy New Year! xxx

IMG_7899

But before that..did you have a lovely Christmas?

IMG_7809

We did.  Ignoring the fact it’s the first fake one ever to grace this house, we even managed a Christmas tree of sorts.

IMG_7957

Decorated with everything homemade..

IMG_7954

From reindeer dioramas and cotton yoyos,

IMG_7955

To felt snowman,

IMG_7952

And special handmade gifts.

IMG_7807

Then on the big night itself we laid a cunning plan with Bella and Charlie to catch the red man in action. We sneakily stuck a mobile phone to the wardrobe door….and set it to timer…and blow-me-down…(with a little help from capture the magic)…it only went and worked!!

IMG_7959

And look what I got in my stocking!

IMG_7814

Then it was a quick glass of champagne by the tree before being whisked off to a feast at Auntie Ali’s..in a London black cab. How civilised?

IMG_7824

Father, daughter love..

IMG_7818 IMG_7826

Cousin love.

IMG_7831

Fairy love.

IMG_7832

(Spot the odd one out) (it’s harder than you think..)

IMG_7835 IMG_7837 IMG_7903 IMG_7949

Then to top the festivities off..Charlie lost his first front tooth..it hails a whole new dawn..

Transforming teatowels..

IMG_7782

Thank you to Kerry for my fabulous vintage tea towel, as model by Bella in our temporary kitchen!

IMG_7783

I won my teatowel by getting the nearest guess to how many of these Kerry had made in a jar.  She’s making 3,000 of them to turn into a bedspread…she’s that kinda gal – articulate, dextrous, imaginative..and can just make the most beautiful things, from hand woven blankets to mouth watering chocolates..and she also runs her own Etsy shop selling vintage linens. She truly is one in a million…if you click on the link now, there’s even a recipe for toffee which I can guarantee to be utterly delicious.

IMG_7784

We’ll be turning these (an extra thank you!) into decorations for our first fake Christmas tree EVER. It’s in the garden right now…but when the builders leave us, it’s coming in, if only for a few days. And covered with all things home made.

IMG_7785

As for the tea towel..I’m almost loathed the use it.  It’s in such glorious shape/colour/nick, I feel, it’s like a much loved sheep dog or dog for the blind, that after a hard, fulfilling life it needs a good retirement.  I’m tempted to turn it into a cushion, a bit like Julie from VintageAttitude  did for me with my Grandmother’s tea cosy..(and yes..it will be complete with pom poms Dievca!) I can just see it as an elegant, refined bolster on our bed.
IMG_7786

The two cushions I bought from Julie also started life as tea towels…

Food for thought hey…

Christmas Creative x

julkulor2

It’s the last day of the term for the kids, which would normally herald my favourite time of the year – hunkering down with crafts and an open fire to embrace everything glitter, festive and fun.   It’s not the same with builders in the house…but why – really – should it be any different? In fact, with all our decorations in storage, the call to make everything is stronger than ever..I’m just thinking we need to keep everything as cheap and as simple as possible…decorations from paper?

julkulor4

Surprisingly effective: Cut out the shape, glue 2 sides together..and keep going.  Miniatures for a garland..larger for a tree..

Nalles-House-Paper-Ball-Ornaments-2

Or these globes? Fun with scissors and a hole-punch..

origami-diamond-ornaments

If we get really carried away…. a spot of origami?

(Or maybe we’ll just stick to to the good’ol paper chain….)

Foxy Lady x

All I want for Christmas is a Christmas tree..but it’s not going to happen..there’s no space and it’ll just get covered in dust.  But I might compromise with a fox scarf..I like the play on the vintage look. I’ve seen children’s versions, which could be like a neck scarf. But personally I like the longer, Tom-Baker-Doctor-Who ones..
