Just Because..

There’s something rumbling in the air: Apparently Isabel Marant opted out of sharing her pre-season pictures with anyone until as late as possible.  She said it was less to do with the threat of copying than over exposure – ‘There’s just too much stuff’.  A notion that is starting to infiltrate and seep through the runway shows at New York fashion week…It’s becoming too obvious, too controlled..and the designers – crowned icons of creativity – are starting to rebel and explore other avenues to present their collections.  It’s about time.

Rosie Assoulin presented her collection at the Meatpacking District (I like her thinking) with her usual chutzpah and personal style.

She sees a hemline and moves it up further… a gather becomes a statement.

A simple stripe is now a conversation of pattern and geometrical possibilities.

Exposure is about dreams, not exploitation.

Extravagance, strength and femininity all simply and elegantly pulled together with beautiful tailoring.

Now a stalwart of fashion week, she’s still a breath of fresh air.

And I love her candles.

I read an article once that said it was only ever possible to have two out of the three of the holy grails of building works: Cost, quality, time.  I think the similar principals apply to children at halfterm…happy children, messy house, cost…only ever two at one time..but at least acknowledging these salient truths makes wading through the detritus of my present house so much easier.  Which is a good thing, because added to our layer of general chaos is the fact we have the school quiz next week – this was last year – so why should this year be any different? We’ve started working on the costumes..and discovered a new creative product – ever come across thermomorph moldable plastic before??

IMG_8200

It’s amazing stuff. You add these little plastic balls to boiling water.

IMG_8203 IMG_8202

And wait 2 minutes till they go clear.

IMG_8208

Then you take it out and wait just long enough so no-one will get scalded.

IMG_8211

And start molding…into anything you want.

IMG_8210

It’s amazing stuff – the time line between being soft and hard is quite short – but you can just drop it back in the boiling water to soften again.  And they dry totally opaque and white. What we were making I can’t say…except all will be revealed next week…

Tracy Reese is an older soul with youthful eyes who has the magic to make retro content spring to life.

She’s not a label I know – after spotting her 2016 Fall collection I went to her website to learn more expecting a continuation of this subdued, edgy elegance – and was greeted with bright, hot pink and a style more reminiscent of a catalogue shop: The site needs a makeover, because this is a rich, deep vein she’s uncovered.

She makes large shapes and floaty lines look feminine and easy.

All beautifully composed and perfectly remembered.

Ceilings x

IMG_8194

Probably the coldest morning of the winter today – the perfect conditions for clearing the garden of Molly’s now solid brown presents. Makes me wonder if someone has invented a poo-freezer yet…no! not somewhere to store her daily offerings! but something Ghostbuster-like to make the job even slightly more fun..a bit like the paint I tried on the ceiling this weekend.  I hate painting ceilings..but there’s more of a twinkle if it’s an ever-so subtle shade of bubble gum pink..

IMG_8191

What do you think? A design step too far??

IMG_8195

Good job it turns white after an hour…hehe!

In principal it’s a great idea..but does make you realise how hard/long it takes to paint cornice properly..

Small steps..

DIY-Homemade-Dryer-Sheets-horiz

This weekend marks the start of moving towards a less wasteful life as inspired by this post.  For me, it’s not about wearing a horsehair shirt but finding simple solutions that work and moving away from the total belief in mass produced, mass marketed products we pick up without thinking.  The first experiment neatly fits in with my own eco philosophy – it involves dryer sheets – which to many would be an environmental oxymoron, but as a dryer works for us as a family it stays – and the spotlight goes onto what goes into the dryer..

From my research, there seem to be two basic methods – the first involves using ready made (you could make your own..there are recipes..(I’m not there yet)) fabric conditioner. Strips of old towels or sponges are soaked in the solution and then are used either wet, straight from the pot or can be dried before hand.

The next method requires a larger leap of faith…the cloths are stored and left soaking in a mixture of vinegar and essential oils (any combination you fancy).  They say, when the clothes come out, any smell of fish and chips has evaporated away…

The kids could be grateful it’s half term next week…

House update..

IMG_8183

It’s becoming like Christmas here with something new every day…another major part of the build – the floor – is going down…

IMG_8184

It’s ticking all the boxes…the choice had again been a step away from the norm as I’d asked them for as many knots/character/colour variations as possible..basically a posh design that feels rustic.

IMG_8185

The transformation is taking a bit of getting used to – after staring at it (for what was probably hours) I gingerly tried to balance my way round the unfinished edge to get to the stairs. ‘It’s a floor!’ The builders said, ‘Walk on it!’

Except I can’t!..

(Don’t think it will stop the kids though…)

The good news is I’m off this morning to pick up our platform ladder from my sister…which means the serious renovation decoration is about to start.

Backsplash Recap..

7da966f6a9fd8fabaa2656662aef9723

From hero to zero: After the joy of last week, all that’s now left of the kitchen is an empty room with a few pipes in the floor as it’s all been shipped to the spray painters.  I committed to the final colour yesterday…nerve wracking! Particularly when you’ve had your heart set on one shade since the start…and then you’re told it’s not possible.  Thank God I’m a great believer in fate..but it hasn’t stopped my heart from pounding.

af9dc8e2a1734e41ee14d71465def2ae

But more decisions await: There was this post on splashbacks a while back and the final look still needs to be pinned down.  Loving all things metallic at the moment so I’m thinking why not?

So much to choose from!

IMG_8169

But budget does come into it..so I took myself off to bog standard B and Q to see what I could find that could be man-handled into something different…and was surprisingly successful.  There’s this woven brass sheet, reminiscent of French Bergere sofas and chairs..

IMG_8171

Laid over a stainless steel sheet it would compliment and pull in the stainless steel from the fridge/freezer..

IMG_8172

Then there was this design..if the design itself had been bigger I would’ve snaffled it up there and then..

IMG_8180

And then they had this..hammered copper rather than brass..again, not sure as it was only in the smaller size..and all the accents are brass..would pink work??

IMG_8178

I was sensible..there’s no rush – yet.  So I walked away and will let it all cogitate and stew down…
