Grayson Perry

Grayson Perry

When was the last time you were touched by someone so brilliant they made your head start sub-dividing?

A-House-for-Essex_FAT_Grayson-Perry_Jack-Hobhouse_dezeen_784_12

Stand back and welcome previous Turner Prize winner and national gem, Grayson Perry and his new project, a House for Essex: a collaboration with Charles Holland and the architecture studio FAT.  Built in Wrabness this huge marmite piece of art is a monumental shrine to a completely fictional character, a lady called Julie May Cope and is dedicated to the ‘Single mums of Dagenham, hairdressers in Colchester and the landscape and history of Essex’. The house holds testament to Perry’s visions of Julie’s life, through her birth in Canvey Island in 1953 to her two marriages, her children, her work all the way to her sudden death at the hands of a pizza delivery moped on Colchester High Street at the premature age of 61.

On the outside there’s a shining copper roof and 1924 glazed terracotta sigils of St jules.

Inside, the main room is in the style of a chapel to pay homage to the life of an ordinary woman.

There are biographical tapestries and pictures over the ceilings with snap shots of her history.

In pride of place and hanging as a chandelier is the very moped that killed her.

Upstairs, the two bedrooms are dedicated to her two marriages..the second of which was a story of true, tender love which permeates through the whole building and draws it together.

Kitsch, ebullient and eccentric it may be, but the joy of Perry is that in his work, as in his life, he describes the truth as he sees it.  Underneath the undeniable humour, there’s a deeper, thicker message running through.   This is a celebration of a modesty of aspiration and acquisitions that uses high art to pay homage to the notion of hard work and normality.  It’s one mans couture shrine to the silver linings and special moments that bless every single life, no matter how hard or down trodden.  Which ties up nicely with why it was commissioned in the first place: It’s part of philosopher and critic Alain de bottom’s (great name hashtag-childish-sense-of-humour) Living Architecture programme to allow members of the public – that’s you and me – to stay in buildings by world class contemporary designers. Click here for more details for your own personal taste of Julie’s life.

I’m in the running for a posh frock because sometimes you need an outfit that ramps it up a little for life’s big events.  The skill is finding that special something that won’t then die and lie discarded like an unwanted snake skin in the dark recesses of a wardrobe, festering with the pungent smell of a wasted fortune.

Self-Portrait, based in London and led by designer Han Chong lives and breathes those type of slightly exotic pieces..the ones that turn heads but can then be bundled into a suitcase and worn with a pair of battered (as in old, not fried…) flip-flops in the summer sunshine on a sandy beach..

He’s also keen to marry contemporary design with affordable prices, which floats my boat..and his attention to detail is impressive.

Modern with a fit-for-combat edge, it’s a label that still manages to be feminine, graceful..and most importantly..very desirable..

An arctic bloom has descended on the UK; a wave of cold has reached out it’s icy fingers once more.  The result in some ways is quite pleasing – deep blue skies and crystal clear air making all around bright and focused (I fear I’m the exception proving the rule..) but it means the weather isn’t honest – it’s horribly deceptive with a chilly, biting wind.  Then the wind drops and there’s power in the sun…just enough to make you resent your layers.  Basically, it’s complicated – which means thought into transitional clothing is probably essential, so much so I can see the appeal of these sheepskin sandals from Celtic & Co…that warmth..but still cool.

Plus, at £50 they’re a bit of a bargain combined with the extra joy of being a slipper crossover..

This is Warmer Castle, firmly re-named Windy Castle by the kids and you can see why.  They get dragged here every time we’re in the area as it’s one of my favourite places ever.

4514805880_15480ca90e_z 4603944721_6c95f485bc_b

There’s the faded elegance inside (it’s also where the Duke of Wellington died).

IMG_0524

And the gardens are glorious – typically formal English – but manage to be so natural you’re convinced the plants just wanted to grow this way anyway. And the view..sigh..there’s an uninterrupted vista all the way down to the sea..

IMG_0531

We found a large dead frog in the pond..true excitement! I didn’t take a picture..

IMG_0525 IMG_0534 IMG_0530

It’s also really good for hide and seek..

IMG_0528 IMG_4798

Then we hit the hottest day of the year so far…time for a sandy beach..so to Camber Sands we went..

IMG_4802

We weren’t the only people with this ingenious idea..

IMG_4803

But this is a beach that soaks up people..the view the other side..

IMG_4812 IMG_4827

It also has one of the biggest tides I’ve ever seen..

IMG_4828

You have to run..

IMG_4831 IMG_4836IMG_4864

And run!

IMG_4897

But it’s worth it!

IMG_4848

Then you have to run back again!

IMG_4851 IMG_4870

We found baby flat fish in the shallows..if you prodded them they spun away at great speed like disturbed underwater birds.

IMG_4871 IMG_4879

And a dead dog fish with impressive spines.

But just to show it’s not all happy families…this is Bella at the end of the day giving Charlie the evil eye for daring to enter her newly designed ferry without buying a ticket first..go on guys..just one smile for Mummy! Please?!

I think I’m in love.  I just want to dance down the summer streets to the mellow sounds of the slapped strings of a double bass accompanied by low husky vocals to carry me home.

The biggest downer about the UK is the weather – it’s why we’re so obsessed with it.  Head out for a holiday by the sea and rather than a cheery parasol, it’s highly likely you’ll be hiding under a large umbrella. So seeing the sun on our first day, we clapped our hands with merry glee!

IMG_4742

And sank a large glass of cold white to celebrate the whole damn great joy of it..

IMG_4737

Whilst watching the kids chase seagulls on the beach..

IMG_4695

We weren’t far from Dover; So often a passing point, so rarely for stopping.  But overlooking the harbour is Dover castle, an imposing building with a cornucopia of history dating back to the Romans.

IMG_4705

But we were there to see the underground tunnels…

IMG_4699

Originally dug out as a prison in the Napoleonic wars, they were resurrected in WW2 to provide a secret headquarters and a hospital.

IMG_4701

This is where all the planning took place for Operation Dynamo and the evacuation of Dunkirk.

IMG_4702

Over 30 metres down there’s something like 3.8 km of tunnels, including deep, deep down, a nuclear bunker called Dumpy.

IMG_4703

During the War Dover was hit by over 2000 bombs, making it one of the worst hit towns in the UK.  But none fell within the castle walls – apparently Hitler rather fancied the castle for himself and banned it from being bombed…if only he knew…

IMG_4713

It’s a brilliant exhibition – real thought and atmosphere has gone into the presentation with clever projections onto the walls and newsreel footage.  On the hospital tour, you follow the story of a wounded spitfire pilot accompanied by the sounds of a bombing raid and flickering lights. Not for the claustrophobic!

IMG_4761

A spot of light relief was then needed..

IMG_4766

Even a star fish still has fascination..

IMG_4767

Until Daddy chases you with it..

IMG_4768

My kids are such urbanites..

We looked for sea diamonds..

And pushed Daddy in..

Big Day..

Finish_of_2007_Oxford-Cambridge_boat_race

Today will see the 70th staging of the Oxford and Cambridge boat race: Iconic, exclusive, elitist sporting gold.  And for the first time ever, women will be rowing their own race, on the same stretch of water, on the same day and, like the men, it will be broadcast live to millions.

The change is due to Helena Morrissey (Cambridge graduate with 9 children and no background in rowing) Chief Executive of Newton Investment Management and their sponsorship.  She found it shocking that there was such a discrepancy between the men and the women..but don’t think it was plain sailing for her to introduce the change.  It wasn’t.

Nina Carberry is also riding in the Grand National today (think of all the girls who have riding lessons.  Now think how many female jockeys there are..) – there is Katie Walsh – she won the Irish Grand National this week…but she doesn’t have a horse to ride…says a lot.  Carberry is in red-hot form having won over the National fences already on Thursday in the Fox Hunters’ Chase…it’s a tough, tough race but I’ll be backing her and First Lieutenant all the way to make history and be crowned the first lady of Aintree.  It’s about time.

A style icon is someone with the power to dazzle by simply being themselves and Gwendoline Christie, (best known for playing the part of Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones) is as bright and compelling as any of the celebrity fashion role models regularly spoonfed to us by the synthesised, visually generalised media.  But with added spice..there’s something powerful, complex and original about her..made all the more special when you take into account her six foot three inch size..

da050ed14b5ebdf7e03f9859a66f9576

As someone who has at times felt genderless because of her height, it interests her to challenge our assumptions of femininity and what it is to be a woman.

6a0bc8d92af73c7b33c4fa4c637cd5ed

The role of Brienne – unfeminine in appearance, an object of scorn, clinging naively to the idealised concept of knighthood but always being treated with contempt and resentment for her gender, despite her considerable skill – is a role she relishes as a gift and the most extraordinary opportunity to portray the type of feminine outsider we rarely see in the mainstream.

955e66fb7f80d3206262be9f6491db03

It’s a part that crosses the invisible line between an actors vanity and personal vanity..you have to be prepared to be displayed as unattractive, large and masculine..and for people to believe that’s what you truly are.
