I am an avid Pinterest poster.  Driven by all things visual, I find it a place I can nail down fleeting thoughts and find substance to inspiration. It’s the workings of my inner mind, but held in aspic so it doesn’t fly away again. It’s also my way to test longevity – a day, a week, a month later, is there still the same reaction?  Sometimes things are pinned for the wrong reasons – on one level it’s a sofa, but the real magpie glint is the inspiring colour of the wall. Sometimes there’s a purpose, often there’s not, the intent just to trail a hand in the flow of colour and movement, pick up the scent of future trends. But this post is about what has caught other people’s eyes, what has unexpectedly cut the mustard in the big, wide world? Like this chair, from Ian Snow, has a remarkable 1.6k impressions.  Is it the velvet? the flexibility? the squish? Or all three?

 

 

It’s summer, the 70’s are becoming a thing. No surprise then that all things rattan are having a moment. Like this light from Etsy, 123 impressions and counting.

 

 

This one, again from Etsy. A bargain at £32.53 plus shipping. 104 impressions and rising.

 

 

This light is ranking third – from Design Vintage at £110 has 94 impressions.


 

At 110 impressions, this modern garden pod has caught the imagination. It comes from a photo I took from the Home section of The Times. No details unfortunately.

 

 

Is it the bench? Or the cushion? The link was for the cushion – £45 from Dibor –  915 for  impressions.

Wasted x

Wastepaper are part of the bare essentials a room needs, but it’s freeing to think that a place for the rubbish in our lives could be beautiful too..

So I took a look. I like the idea of a grand bin – something that takes pride in it’s job and makes a statement.  What I didn’t realise was the grand price attached – the first picture? £185..for a bin.  That’s a living  oxymoron. This one from Oka? A snip at £75..

It seems that bins run in the same business rip-off as cars – people are willing to pay a premium for a new one, meaning they’re devalued as soon as the first snotty tissue lands. So my tip – look to Ebay and Etsy where vintage examples with character can be found at a tenth of the price.

For me, I think I’ll follow my folksy heart and go for canal art painted buckets.

The quote is back for the garden office: this could actually be happening! The basic design is based on the shape above with the high point of the roof at the front, it’s a bit of an optical illusion that makes the rest of the roof disappear. As above, there will be one long bench desk across the window leaving the majority of the floor space clear for the kids to potentially camp out as and when. The entrance will be down the left side (just out of sight in the picture). Ours will be slightly bigger than this with a little add on room on the right where the roof dips down, to provide extra storage for gardening equipment etc to make use of our irregular shaped garden which only pretends to be a rectangle.

Inside will be a cunning mixture of plywood…

pallet wood….

And white.

Lights will either be black, adjustable wall light/s.

Or possibly, depending on height/position a lamp like this one from Ikea at £29 hung against the ceiling.  Why not?

And of course there needs to be a bright splash of colour with a vintage desk lamp.

I was talking about this to a friend today, so now I’m blogging about it:  It’s a simple retro peg board discovered at Berylune complete with wooden pegs which would be perfect in Charlie’s room to carry the clutter from his desk.

It’s good, simple, honest, clever design with multiple uses.  To be honest, you can probably pick up a bargain by searching ‘work shop storage’. I was being a bit anal, loving the wooden pegs. But I’m hoping I’ll be able to customise it anyways – there are plenty of websites on how to make your own.

You now what you’re meant to do at the start of each season: Gatecrash the party and scoff all the canapes.  But somehow it never happens like that.  Take Sunday afternoon with it’s languid air of relaxation when sofas become blankets and fingers lazily skim across tablets.  And light upon the dream dress. OMG!! That’s it!!..

It’s just like that dress that’s been lying in my great dresses folder in Pinterest for 2 years. OK..not exactly the same..the pockets are missing..the pockets are fab..pockets can always be added.  I love the white, but there’s only the option of blue, red or black.  Red could work.  But it’s a summer dress. You need autumn clothes.  But I’ll need summer clothes next year and WHAT?! Just £45?? It’s in the basket….and do they have any more bits of heaven?

So Wright..

The news around the world isn’t great at the moment.  Condensed down, the underlying message I’m hearing is that big things don’t work (Didn’t we learn anything from the Romans?).  And yet the drive to continually make everything bigger and supposedly better runs deep, because if you don’t…you’re a failure; The economy has to grow, companies have to grow..countries, even religions all want to expand till they become these slow moving bloated beasts that eat up everything in their way, with no joined up thinking except feeding this thirst for size and dominance. It’s a big day for Greece today.  I don’t know what the right answer is..I’m not sure there is one, except maybe they should never have joined the EU in the first place. But it seems to me that things are becoming more and more about power plays than people.

It feels horribly unfair that summer in the UK is already slipping away over the horizon, but this week has heralded non-stop torrential rain and the unearthing of boots and jeans.

Normally, there’s a tipping point in late summer when the weak sunshine, falling leaves and hit of frost take on a tantalising sense of expectation for soft layers and roaring fires..but not in August. Not before terms even started..

But it seems that we’re in serious transition..that time when bare legs get mixed with big cardies and upper halves look like winter, whilst below is still hopeful for sunshine.
