The mirror in which we see ourselves is warped – so why not pull the lines a little bit more?

So thinks Paper London, a fashion brand that imbues simplicity as it’s backbone and strong architectural lines, it’s war cry.

How cool and clever? Asymmetrical, flattering and pulls the eye to a different point of interest.

What’s real?

I think I would like to live in a log cabin by water with honest furnishings and the simple things in life.  But there’s always the nagging thought – does life just look greener on the other side? Are you taking for granted the bits of urban grime that really make your heart sing? Or is living in the big smoke an assumption we all buy into?

Money is an assumption.  It now has no actual value other than the fact we all believe in it.  Take this dress – except that’s an assumption too because it’s really a nightie.  Are you prepared to accept that without questioning?

These could all be multi-functional, year long investment buys – nightwear in the winter, day wear in the summer.  The only barrier is what you’ve been told. Or not.

Bella’s room x

There’s a promise I need to keep and that’s redecorating Bella’s room:  Never an easy thing when they want identity and you’re spending the hard cash.  So in the knowledge of generational divide and the spirit of finding the grey area she’s been pinning her inspiration.

I don’t think I need to worry. Hashtag my girl is growing up. Fast.

Ashya x

The marmite of the bag world: The fanny pack, the bum bag, the bag that is awesomely functional but struggles to be beautiful.  Until now.

Feast your peeks on these beauties: Made by Ashya, a Brooklyn based design label who wanted to produce an unconventional and reimagined look for a luxury bag.

Bumbags have always had a place in my heart – I possess two – but high on the lust list has been a leather utility styled version with a masculine edge: These tick that long sought for box.

The company takes it’s eco credentials seriously – the bags are produced locally in NYC’s garment district, as is the hardware used.

They’re not a cheap option, but that’s the incentive of buy less, buy better.  This is an investment that will just get better with age.

Which has to be a good thing.

Undercut x

It’s been a presence for a while – these things are never new – travelling the undercurrents, a throwback from the eighties: I can remember my Aunt and Uncle’s cries of distress at seeing my cousins razor cut take all those years ago – long on top, buzz cut sides and back. So radical for a girl – it was wild.

Now the frisson is changing into something tangible, a stronger scent on the wind, like the start of spring it’s the smell of change.

Call it a reaction to Weinstein, a claiming of freedom or a rejection of labels, these cuts are a statement.

They say I’m doing this because I like it. End of story.

Is it possible to be unflamboyant yet charismatic?

The washable paper bag Collection from Uashmama would shout a resounding yes!

The vaguely eastern exotic name is actually designed and handcrafted in Tuscany by a company created by 4 sisters in homage to their mother.Made from a 100% washable cellulose eco-friendly material, the paper is made using virgin fibre from cultivation not deforestation, it’s lightweight but feels like leather and washes like a fabric and the price point is excellent: from £8 to £116 (the man who’s so hard to buy for? Nailed.)

Colourscope x

If there’s a new trend coming it’s all about colour.

Which is not to say anything goes.

Because whilst colour is happy, joyous, exuberant and life affirming..

Get it wrong and it’s discordant, jarring and painful.

Good job nobody here got it wrong..

Elvis & Krasse x

Elvis & Krasse are one of those companies that make you wish you were them.  At their workshop based in Kent, they rescue raw materials destined for landfill and recraft them into authentic luxury items. Donating 50% of their profits to charity means their Godly status is secured.

Two projects are their mainstays – working with de-commissioned fire hoses that once lived in hell and are now made in heaven.

And working with Burberry on the global issue of leather waste, using their cast offs to create inventive designs.

Their products are built to last, combining world-class handmade craftsmanship with timeless design.  And they also repair for life for free. Yes. You can read that again and believe it.

Loved and honed into existence, this is one Company to remember.

High Times x

January to easily represents the bleak recognition of the aftermath: The twinkly lights are gone, the weather is foul and last months credit card bills are circling like starving carrion.

But the first signs of spring are out there – the first glimpse of snowdrops, the first hint of cotton clothing appearing on the high street.

H&M have some impressive staples to offer – on trend blouses, softly hanging silk shirts, high waisted tie trousers and easy wear long sleeved dresses…

It’s temptation – but it’s sensible temptation.
