Padded x

Are layers the transition between seasons or are they the season, only the number being the decider? After being convinced for years over the importance of the big coat and the big jumper, I’m beginning to think it’s the later that’s more useful – that subtle transformation to come with fluctuating temperatures both outside and in, from t-shirt to adding thin jumper and maybe a shirt, to a blazer or denim jacket to a padded gilet before the final layer and herald of true winter – the thick coat. Once reconsidered as both a coat and a layer, the padded coat’s star quality starts rising exponentially, especially now they’re so lightweight, yet thin and warm.

It also helps they hold structural shape. Another point of happy difference. Who knew the anorak would become a vital wardrobe staple?

Clothes List x
Weather update in London: Drab, grey, definitely cooler than December but still not cuttingly cold – not a true frost to be seen, instead lots of rain, puddles and mud. It’s when I miss the twinkling lights of Christmas and long for spring – which is still a good six weeks away.
Clothes are still transitional – I wore my big winter jumper for the first time today, but that’s probably more because we have no heating as the boiler is being moved. To go out, all I needed was a light wool jacket – which sums up the weirdness of a winter that’s never progressed: It’s a time of mashing up opposites – skinny jeans with giant cardigans, long wool coats with no socks….floaty skirts and enormous jumpers.

Just keep a brolly handy.

The Inbetweeners x
If we Brits are obsessed with the weather it’s with good reason: On Friday it was a barmy sixteen degrees..on Saturday, it snowed (OK it didn’t hang around but it wasn’t a figment of a vivid imagination either..) which possibly explains why we’re all so preoccupied with layers and wearing coats that remind us of beds.
Because the quilt is having a quiet spin in the limelight, perfect as a stand alone or working it’s magic as a sartorial hot water bottle under a top coat, it’s one of those under-the-radar-winter-must-haves.
And Amsterdam based Company Scotch and Soda have some of the best…
Casual or smart.
Often reversible.
They’re adaptable, transitional and just a little bit different.
Another addition it to the winter uniform list of lust.

Valentino…
Is it any wonder that we Brits are obsessed with the weather? Last week it snowed..this week they are telling us we could hit 17/18 degrees celsius…it is quite frankly ridiculous – but it does explain our endless fascination with layers – an utter necessity for spring in the UK which brings me nicely to the o-so-wonderful-and-brilliant-pure-genuis-in-a-bottle pre-fall (similar weather. Think about it.) 2013 Valentino Collection. Sigh. Leave the real world and feast your peepers on these beauties..
I think I have died and gone to heaven.
Little PS – Speaking of heaven..I am attending a funeral today..attending and actually finding playing my violin that I can honestly say hasn’t come out of it’s case in nearly ten years…I shouldn’t be able to play after all that time…but obviously all that killing the cat intensive training did something (I did play professionally for a bit before rejecting it completely. Another story)…still, it will be strange..which in my rambling way leads me on to my point – the very lovely ‘Her Passion for Fashion’ has nominated us for a Versatility Blogger Award – and we are chuffed to bits..we want to say a proper thank you and pass the baton on – but it deserves a proper post and not this one I had already pencilled…I will be back to do it justice.
