Rachel Comey. Homie.
Rachel Comey stirs the spirit, lifts the soul and happily shakes it.
Take her Ready to Wear 2017 collection which she staged, in celebration of 15 years in the business, on the streets of NY in reference to her very first catwalk show.
How apt: The source of inspiration part of the realism.
With garments in different shapes and sizes reflecting reality.
Modelled by real people of all genders, age, figure type yet still sewn together with a signature style.
It’s a gauntlet.

The appeal of perusing the latest catwalk offerings is thinking you are getting ideas hot off the sewing machine..
Except of course you’re not..large flotsam of inspiration comes for the likes of you and I just walking the streets with a strange consortium of bits from vintage sales and jumbles..so there’s a rather wonderful organic life force with no-one having a monopoly, a wave of responding and creating that the Designers then put a spotlight on..and then we think it’s brilliant all over again, but maybe in a different way..
Except the way something influences and what processes then happen is up to the individual, which can be truly enlightening, particularly if they have a strong voice..
Amplifying, creating opposition, accepting, asking for more or leaving a loose edge – utilitarian wear in posh fabrics, it’s all in the interpretation..
At Rachel Comey SS15 you can taste the strength – there’s a simplicity reflective of a confidence in what she sees..
With masterful strokes of clashing patterns, eras and colour. But does she influence my style? – or do I fly to her light because there’s a kindred understanding?
I can’t really say why her silhouettes appeal so much..
(Although I find it hard to resist a good beltbag..)
Her designs are far from the traditional feminine shapes..

But then, I’ve always preferred sexy to be a suggestion of shape – and fashion to be style rather than trend…and maybe that’s why she makes my eyes sparkle…

How Very, Very..
Rachel Comey Resort 2015: She is her own brand. I never thought short sleeve jackets would crawl back into trend, but this is kiss worthy.
Set in an unfinished apartment, this shoot says these clothes work any place, any where.
Managing to combine artisan cool with subtle lyricism, ankle boots with a jumpsuit..a stand-out silhouette with uber-appeal.
Historical references resonate – I recognise these jeans. It’s fresh yet it feels familiar and satisfying, like it’s the next part of an ongoing conversation.
Each out fit is complete with a lust factor in every item right down to the shoes – it would be all to easy to underestimate the power of this.
You want to touch it and see how it moves.
Ultimately, you want to wear it.

If Rachel Comey and I met we’d be BFs. Seriously.
Her latest AW14 Collection is full of laid back loucheness that manages to sing of both ease and statement.
Neoprene? No. Let’s beautifully quilt everything that moves.
The masculine elements lured away, replaced by feminine curves.
(NB: Wearing brogues without socks is an art form..get it wrong and an unfortunate sucking sound echoes with you down the street frightening small furry animals….just saying)
The colours..
The coat..
It takes nerve to be so every day, but this Collection packs a punch and leaves a powerful sense of self.

Rachel Comey is a Master in the art of adding loose without adding weight.
So maybe it’s not surprising that she originally started out by designing Menswear. She swapped to Womenswear inspired by the number of women sneaking into the Menswear section to buy her clothes. She’s never looked back.
She looks to the past and is inspired by vintage with little sips of rebellion.
It’s not about showily declaring yourself.
But rather great riches in small spaces.
