Mini Morris! x

So William Morris – who will always and forever had a piece of my heart – has teamed up with Swedish brand DockATot to produce some of the most edible nursery soft furnishings I’ve ever seen. Which is mind bending on several levels – 1. why has no-one thought of this before? and 2. No-one has because we compartmentalise everything away, with Morris floating under Victorian in big letters, and masculine in little. Which means should we throw all conditioned thinking under the nearest bus? And 3. If you’re thinking pah! I have no need for nursery whimsy – I would further highlight the perils of conditioned thinking, because their floor cushions are any-excuse-for-any-room-to-die-for.

Alpine Style x

It’s the time of year where life seems to contract inwards, windows and doors closed, curtains drawn. Huddling and cosy. What better expression of that feeling than this chalet, tucked away in the mountains? What amazes me, is when I take the pictures in their whole, I love them. When I analyse individual bits, I question my choice – the pine wood – too orange? The side table and rug – Ikea? The pink cushions – too charity shop? Then I think, am I being honest? Or am I battling conditioned behaviour – maybe the wood has warmth, the rugs are original, and the cushions vintage. Is this actually a wind of change…?

There’s certainly beauty in simplicity.

But I still don’t like pine when it’s too orange…

This has to one of my favourite outfit combinations. Of all time: The shrugged nonchalance of everyday pieces thrown together, the intention comfort rather than impression, the impression just a byproduct meaning the zeitgeist it creates is pure enigma. As delicious as cedar woodsmoke on a crisp autumn evening. The brilliance behind this look is the Argentinian model, Mica Arganaraz. Look and weep.

So chic, it makes my heart ache.

Transition shoes x

Are clogs the new winter shoe? Possibly. The pandemic has had a strange effect with changes rippling out and now clogs make sense – perfect for sliding on for little trips to nowhere. And then flinging off on return; they are the ideal indoor shoe for the modern person. But if this is the purpose of clogs, the sheepskin versions seem much softer and more appealing – I’ve been wearing my ancient shearling Celts complete with worn toe holes since summer first started waning, but if I was going for an upgrade, it would be for these Birkenstocks. My only fear would be the temptation of the rest of the Birkenstock range…

Hands up x

I’ve mixed up the pics of mens and women gloves, mainly because I don’t like segregation of any form; I think it leads to the worst kind of fomo. And because it generally leads to the men getting the cleaner, stronger designs. Which is not to say these gloves by Mabel Shepherd aren’t fab and certainly deserve a place on both ‘presents to give’ and the lust list. Can you tell which one is which?

Except the computer had other dividing ideas – still, do you mind your designs conforming?

Leaves Leave x

I took a train journey on Saturday – just a few stops down the line, but was amazed by the colours of the leaves on the trees either side of the track. Then the gales arrived, decimating the exhibition. In their passing honour, it seems right to celebrate the work of natural nature artist Richard Shilling and his unique way of exploring the themes of existence and transience.

Film fashion x

A momentous week: Bella had her 14 birthday; I feel the passing of time, which is maybe why I’m indulging in nostalgia with fashion in films, inspired by this article from Net-a-porter, naming their top styled films of all time. And digging out my equivalents.

Collab x

I got all excited when I saw that Alexa Chung had done a Collab with Barbour, classic mixed with classic quirk had me intrigued.

The pieces, though simple stand alone. But I was gutted with the styling – the Barbour website looks like something a generic garden centre would put together; where’s the mist on the rolling hills, dew caught on blackberry bushes, the wooden farmer’s gate just open, the pheasants, the rust of autumn leaves? Where’s the aspiration, the fantasy? I’m fully aware it is a fantasy – but sometimes it’s good to dream…

Style Icon x

So generic are the names of Charles and Ray Eames that for many years I assumed they were a same sex couple. Slap forehead in horror. This is a look at the interiors that nurtured them – the multiple layers, the natural surfaces, the bold shapes, the division of space and their instant, timeless appeal.
