Trip to the V&A..

It’s been the Easter holidays which can easily feel like tumbleweed…to inject some excitement we all went en famille to the Victoria and Albert museum which just so happens to be one of my most bestest, favourite, most edible places in the world..

IMG_1760Welcome to London.

IMG_1759 IMG_1757 Amazing glass chandelier.  The queues were for the Bowie Exhibition.  Not for us sadly.IMG_1727 The building is a gem.  Incredible floors.IMG_1726 IMG_1755Lots of marble.  Have I said how much I like marble?IMG_1730 Instead of Bowie we got these – special backpacks for children – all free – that take you on an adventure…this time we chose China..IMG_1724 The kids get a map to follow, an instruction book and different tasks to complete all beautifully set up in little separate bags inside the back pack.IMG_1735 IMG_1725 They were happy.  I was happy…When Anna and I can generate enough interest to be able to dye fabric to our own specifications we will be coming here for colour inspiration..and design.IMG_1734 Loved this print.

IMG_1729 This a water dropper in the shape of a squirrel from 1662!IMG_1733The repetition of the print without obvious repetition.IMG_1754 Stunning Mughul dress.IMG_1753 IMG_1752IMG_1751 If I could choose a paper weight…those flecks of green..IMG_1732 isn’t she fabulous? That expression..those colours..IMG_1780 IMG_1731 IMG_1746 This is the courtyard in the centre where there are places to sit, get coffee – or paddle in the pool in the middle.  Seriously.IMG_1743 IMG_1741Inside the Cafe – not my greatest photo, but you can just make out how incredible the wallpaper is.  This cafe was the first museum restaurant in the world and was intended as a showpiece for modern design, craftsmanship and manufacturing.  It is sublime.

IMG_1740 The ceiling..I die.IMG_1739 IMG_1738
IMG_1737 IMG_1736 IMG_0868 IMG_0870 IMG_0871 IMG_0873It is one of the most beautiful places to have a latte in London..IMG_1750The shop, though busy, is pretty awesome too…they have some super cool children’s toys..the above come as flat packed cardboard.

IMG_1749And this dollhouse..
IMG_1748Check out this downstairs room! I really think it was meant for me…

We went on a Treasure Hunt x

article-0-0E9F478100000578-253_634x409(Photo courtesy of Daily Mail/Getty Images)

As we are away, a few trips coming up from memory lane..

I am a bone-fide Londoner, in truth I was born within the sound of Bow Bells inside the City mile, which officially makes me a Cockney, and once-upon-a-time this bestowed the privilege of being buried within the City Walls..if you visit City churchyards you’ll find them banked high either side of the path as they had to stack the bodies due to lack of space..but I digress:  So I am a true City chick..but it wasn’t until a few years ago I learnt there are gas lights still in use in London.  1,600 to be precise, covering 200 miles…

To find them we went on a Treasure Hunt..for four lions, a nose, some lights…and a few knights..

IMG_2175 IMG_2176Lions first.  Good ol’Trafalgar Square.

IMG_2179Sitting on a Lion’s bottom.

IMG_2181IMG_2182 The building you can just see with the clock? Is where the first telegraph from the Titanic arrived to say she was sinking..

IMG_2177Then the search for the elusive ‘Nose’..apparently to be found in Admiralty Arch, a stones throw away..

IMG_2183

Can you see it? in the middle of the plain stone under the first dimpled stone..

IMG_2184A side view..Made of pink granite and 7 ft up, rumour has it that it was once the spare for Nelson’s Column in case his was broken on the way up…

IMG_2187

Others think it’s here  in honour of the Duke of Wellington – it’s at waist height for anyone on a horse and they say the soldiers rub it for luck as they ride through..

IMG_2186The truth? It was put up by the artist Rick Buckley in 1997 as part of a campaign against ‘Big Brother’ society…stop being nosey..

IMG_2188 Through Admiralty Arch to The Mall. Lined with gas lights (the majority are around the Palace, Mayfair and Covent Garden).

IMG_2190With appropriate ‘Admiralty’ ships on the top!

IMG_2189IMG_2191Central London..and it’s like being in the countryside.

IMG_2192All the way down to the Palace.

IMG_2193IMG_2196 IMG_2208 The beautiful lock on the gate…must have a story..

IMG_2209 IMG_2201 IMG_2197IMG_2199To look at the knights..

IMG_2195 IMG_2200And more gas lights – six Gas Lighters work the stretch around Buckingham Palace.

IMG_2206Then Charlie spotted a badger (as you do) and wanted to ask him if the Queen was in and if he was invited for tea..The badger turned out to be an soldier who had done sentry duty himself at the Palace and was a trove of knowledge. Not enough guards he said.  She was away and unfortunately unavailable.

IMG_2203 This is the better picture of said Badger.  But I did debate about whether to post it or not – the anatomically correct part of said Badger was purely unintentional…although his girlfriend seems perfectly happy..

IMG_2204So Charlie then asked a Policeman! He explained that her standard – looking like one of his badges – had to be flying if she was home..

IMG_2205 IMG_2207Charlie was a bit disappointed. But we promised to come back another day..maybe next weekend for the rehearsal of Trooping of the Colour..just as good as the real thing, but much less crowded.  We then got the train home from Victoria.

A simple day in London.  But a lovely one.

Cushions with a touch of vintage..

Slipping in an extra post for the lovely Rubyfoot who was wondering what to do with her  scarfs…and for the wonderful Lizzie at the vintage traveller who has just been given a beautiful scarf!

These pictures are from a project Anna and I did last summer when we were experimenting with vintage..there is an amazing stall in Portabello Market that just sells silk scarves, we trawled the rails to unearth the best to turn into cushions…when you see the beauty of some of the designs (the still life is one of my favourites) you appreciate they really are works of art and should be admired in their full glory.

Just made - ready for selling-cushions! Just made - ready for selling-cushions! Just made - ready for selling-cushions! Just made - ready for selling-cushions! Just made - ready for selling-cushions! Idylic Islington..

Another foray..if you ever want a posh place to trawl vintage then head to Islington.  Ever want a delicious place to shop?…to eat?…to be? then Islington is your place…

IMG_1591 Super cool idea for vintage jelly molds..

IMG_1592 Seriously good vintage shops – and not just clothes.IMG_1593 IMG_1594 Not quite so sure about stuffed fido..sometimes I think we love our pets toooo much.

IMG_1595The vintage clothes shops aren’t bad either.

IMG_1597 IMG_1598 Beautiful lace inside this shop – it was so cold, my camera seized otherwise there would be shots..

IMG_1600It is a really pretty part of London with lots of Georgian houses..it’s actually where my parents live..hello!

IMG_1601 IMG_1602

A shopper/browsers heaven.

IMG_1603 IMG_1604 IMG_1605 IMG_1606 Lovely boutiquey coffee shops

Hidden Gem

A while ago I saw pictures of a posh haberdashery shop in Paris which reminded me of how my heart pounds with anticipation and my palms go sweaty every time I step into a VV Rouleaux shop…but this little treasure tucked deep inside Tooting’s covered market, if I am honest, produces exactly the same effect….

IMG_1662The whole area is an eclectic urban mix, with a big emphasis on food – you can discover the best curries in London here.

And much more.

photo 1-1Which is not to say it’s not edgy.

IMG_1660My little shop is in the Covered Market.

IMG_1659Down on the right hand side.

IMG_1661And is a magpie’s paradise.

IMG_0884IMG_1668IMG_0874
IMG_0875 IMG_0878 IMG_0880 IMG_0876 IMG_0882 IMG_0881What did I buy?

IMG_1664 IMG_1665 IMG_1666 White lace of course!

IMG_1667And some peach lace for lining the inside of dresses.

I can indulge with abandon…explore every creative whim…still go home with pennies in my pocket….having supported a local independent enterprise…huge big Brucie Bonus’s.

What do you see?

Last night I was waiting for my daughter’s gym session to finish when I looked down.IMG_1549And then I realised that all week I had been taking pictures of nothings yet somethings.

IMG_1548The steps at Victoria Station..

photo 1-2The pavements lined with gold.

IMG_1613A well-aged parquet floor.  Which got me thinking about marble chip floors…..except I never see them in this country…I looked down in Sainsburys..IMG_1590And the floor in Anna’s toilet!

IMG_1391The floor in our ensuite.

IMG_1628Our bathroom floor.

IMG_1568

Because where ever you are, there is beauty in the ordinary.

Liberty’s, lushness and London x

I am a great believer in feeding the visual mind so I make little forays into London whenever I can, which lets face it, isn’t exactly a hardship…one of my favourite haunts is the lovely Liberty’s…
IMG_1315

A temptation trove of delights and beautiful displays.

IMG_1316 IMG_1314 IMG_1313IMG_1312Love these candles – you lift up the domes and smell the scent caught in the tops of the glass. J’adore the whole styling/everything – like something out of Hogwarts…

IMG_1310 IMG_1311Check out the fabulous names and descriptions..

IMG_1309 IMG_1308 IMG_1307 IMG_1306Clever mind-confusing scent??…brilliant!

IMG_1300IMG_1303 IMG_1304 IMG_1305IMG_1302Interested to see this label as they blazed a trail for us – they started with just 8 silk shirts.  Now look.

IMG_1301Very simple, very elegant, easy to dress up or down. Timeless.

IMG_1296 IMG_1297Liberty’s – everything we aspire to be – beautiful inside and out.

IMG_1299When in London always look up.

IMG_1294A couple of minutes walk away through Soho is Beyond Vintage..well worth a browse.

IMG_1295 IMG_1292 IMG_1293Finished off with a well deserved coffee in one of the many boutique coffee shops

IMG_1291And a final browse round the market stalls..

IMG_1290Bliss.

Fashion Edibles x

Last night Anna and I put on our glad-rags and tottered off to the bright lights of Regent Street to see the collection launch of Hoss Intropia’s Spring/Summer Collection hosted by Nicola Rose, Creative Director of Red and Emily Johnston, the wonderful Blogger at Fashion Foie Gras.IMG_1525Remember this article in March Vogue?…that’s what this was about… a real treat for anyone born with a fashion-shaped soul in their belly…

IMG_1492

IMG_1511IMG_1483 IMG_1479 IMG_1480

Particularly loved these metallic skinnies and shoes – great every day wear..little bit of lust..the ankle strap just works and the colours…peachy with anything. Love, love, love.

IMG_1487

In fact, all the shoes were pretty awesome – these are the best Valentino ‘homages’ I have seen!…and check out the studs..they’re round! subtly differently lovely.

179528_3_1 Also infatuated with these suede and calfskin wedge sandals – remind me of the Langchamps wedges I covet, but probably a dash more realistic.

179546_3_1Et tres élégant non? Bring on the summer sunshine…heeled sandal with studs. I eat.

IMG_1514Want to push the boat out? Heeled studded sandals – Fab colour… I’m after a pair of heeled gladiator sandals to wear with loose ankle cropped trousers…but which colour??

IMG_1505Emily and Nicola at work on the stairs, commentating and drawing the ideas together.IMG_1506IMG_1497The belt shone out on this full length number – a simple but graceful dress with a charming back.

IMG_1501 IMG_1502This dress had the most unusual flower detailing – it was long, beige, delicately pleated – and as suggested by our pros, would make a beautiful and different bridesmaids dress…

IMG_1512 IMG_1513This was my favourite dress…the cheeky dropped waist gave a salacious curve to the backside in the most wonderful, carefree manner..the two pockets at the front were a top finishing touch. Fab stripes/material combo – it really worked.

IMG_1494Anna with the lovely Emily..we don’t know how this girl manages to do all that she does with such grace and such charm…hats off to her  –  we love you x

Oooh ay Mouret!

I got a giddy thrill when I realised what exactly Roland Mouret had chosen as the inspiration for his fall 2013 ready to wear collection…nothing less than Catherine Deneuve in the 1983 film The Hunger..

Unknown

A three-in-one sliding doors moment of revelation, sparks and vivid memories with many things colliding – first there is Mouret, the fashion designer and the inventor of the infamous Galaxy dress, then there is Catherine Deneuve – the aloof and mysterious film star and a fully fledged MasonBentley style icon as one of the world’s most elegant women.. and then there is the beguiling fact that I – yep, as in ‘moi’ – I was actually in The Hunger…along with David Bowie and Susan Sarandon, all directed by Tony Scott…

IMG_1415I played the musical double to this girl  – can’t remember her name now – but in the movie it was Alice.  We all played in a piano trio together practising Schubert.

IMG_1432Alice played the violin (well, I did)

images-9David bowie the Cello (I first met him at the hairdressers with me under a halo of hedgehog-like highlighting foils.  Most glamorous – but we did share a sandwich together!)

IMG_1431And Catherine Deneuve on the piano.  Which was completely bonkers, especially when you realise that with a modicum of musical knowledge, we were all sitting in the wrong positions – but hey – that’s show business! and the light has to take precedence..

I was a little shadow happily lost in a fairytale – the bulk of the filming was done in a huge, stunningly beautiful old house encased in marble  round the back of the Dorchester Hotel in Mayfair and I spent many a day watching in the wings, amazed by the amount of smoke they used and talking to costume, make-up and hair.  I have graphic memories of the clothes..the lovely lady in charge of costume had just won an Oscar for Chariots of Fire (Kate, always wear pastels – they are your colour!) and I can see the influence of that film running through The Hunger…it was sophisticated, graceful…

Unknown-2 images-4IMG_1434

But this wasn’t what inspired mouret…he looked to the edgy club scene in the opening scenes and the underlying aggressive, feral emotions that permeate the movie..

Unknown-1Check out the sunnies and the harder edges..and see the influence:

I particularly love the cream coat and the trousers above – and it is wonderful to be reminded of a special time in my life… there was talk of me having a proper part – playing Deneuve’s daughter – and I actually got taken out on a wardrobe buying mission…but the idea got canned…however I did get to have my throat cut by David Bowie..

How many people can say that?!
