Hidden Gem
A while ago I saw pictures of a posh haberdashery shop in Paris which reminded me of how my heart pounds with anticipation and my palms go sweaty every time I step into a VV Rouleaux shop…but this little treasure tucked deep inside Tooting’s covered market, if I am honest, produces exactly the same effect….
The whole area is an eclectic urban mix, with a big emphasis on food – you can discover the best curries in London here.
And much more.
Which is not to say it’s not edgy.
My little shop is in the Covered Market.
And some peach lace for lining the inside of dresses.
I can indulge with abandon…explore every creative whim…still go home with pennies in my pocket….having supported a local independent enterprise…huge big Brucie Bonus’s.

That kind of restraint-I mean you, not the buyer for the shop-deserves to be recognized. I’m afraid I would have crumbled. Especially for the colored lace. I seem to have lost any fear of being thought tasteful and sophisticated. All I can think of, when I look in that shop are ‘turbans’ & ‘hat trims’. Naturally, I shall go on a quest for my local equivalent of Tootings. It’s got to be somewhere in Seattle.
Ach! I can’t claim the credit! And funny enough I did think my purchases were a bit lame after I’d published this post but I’ll let you into a secret…it was my second visit of the week! Before I was purchasing trimmings to tart up a lampshade…got side tracked by that black ribbon embroidered by green..am thinking tie-able belt…as for turbans…you’d be spoilt for choice! Truly amazing sari shops here, which I adore. All that embroidery..
I am looking forward to a bit of experimenting with my lace….but must decorate the table for Easter Sunday first…am thinking flying birds..and eggs!..flying eggs! Xxxxx
Flying eggs! Hard or soft boiled?
Our Easter table will include many ugly kid made eggs which they will not eat. At least we’ve learned not to feed them to the dogs! Ugh…
Have you been to Walthamstow. Has its own version of the treasure trove you found. Small but long shop on the left as you walk down the very long high st. Full of sari trimmings, lace, collars to die for and much much more. Well worth a visit….off to make Pom poms and decapitate dolls!! Watch this space….
Always up for an adventure…it’s now on my list. Decapitating dolls..sounds more halloween than easter…I await with anticipation! x
Oh wow, that looks fantastic, I never knew about it. I am going to have to make a trip there. Love the curry in Tooting too, best in London 🙂
Well worth a trip…haberdashery trimmings, buttons, and general eye candy. And the prices – range from 30p a metre to £7.00 for the incredible embroidery in the first pic…other ribbons are £1.00 – £3.50. Really is quality at great prices xxxxx
I see a lot of Indian designs in the ribbons.. In one of the pictures I even see a sari 🙂 Hyderabad in India (where I am currently based) is famous for such embroidered ribbons. In a small market called the Choodi Bazaar in the old city one can get beautiful embroidered ribbons for throwaway prices. Surprised to see these in London 🙂
I am so jealous – you must have heat, sun and inspiration around every corner! And you are right – Tooting, where this shop is, is one of the ‘indian’ areas of London – lots of influences and amazing spices on sale xxx
